Rules of the game

No manifesto.
Six rules.

They apply to every game that leaves this place.

  • Play from a link

No stores, no installs: open the page and the game starts. Updates arrive on their own.

  • Phone or computer

Taps and swipes on the phone, keyboard on the computer and, where it fits, a gamepad. Same game, same address.

  • Easy to start, hard to put down

You get how to play straight away, then discover how much is underneath: in Empire, a holding to grow across ten cities and a club to take to the top, season after season.

  • Verified leaderboards

Daily challenges have leaderboards checked on the server: a score only counts if the run was actually played.

  • Minimal data

Anonymous statistics and no more data than the game needs. If ads or purchases ever arrive, we will say so clearly.

  • A proven engine, more time for the game

Every game starts from the same battle-tested 3D kit: the time we don’t spend rebuilding the foundations goes into rules, balance and detail.

Level map

How a game is made

Five levels, always the same route. None gets skipped, and the last one is never the end.

  1. Level map 1-1

    Idea

A rule you can explain in one sentence. If it needs a paragraph, back to the table.

  2. Level map 1-2

    Prototype

A playable version straight away, on phone and computer, on the same engine as the other games.

  3. Level map 1-3

    Playtest

Real runs and real numbers: where people lose, where they get bored, where they hit “Retry”. Fix, replay, repeat until it works.

  4. Level map 1-4

    Release

The game lands on rootbox.games with its own address. And from there it keeps growing: updates, worlds, seasons.

  5. Level map 2-1 · Next

    The next one

Back to the first level, with an engine that has learned something new.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to download anything?

No. The games run in the browser: open the link and play, on phone, tablet or computer. If you like, you can add them to your Home screen like an app.

Are these quick, casual games?

It depends on the game. Rana and Bone Rush are played in runs of a few minutes, with daily challenges, records and worlds to unlock. Empire is a management game to play for weeks: a holding to grow across ten cities and a club to take to the top, season after season.

How much do they cost?

Today they are free to play. If a game ever has ads or optional purchases, we will say so clearly on its page.

Which browser do I need?

An up-to-date one: Chrome, Safari, Firefox or Edge. The games use the browser’s 3D graphics (WebGL); on very old devices they may run slower.

Where is my progress kept?

In your browser. In daily challenges your score goes to our server, which checks the run before putting it on the leaderboard.

Who is behind Rootbox Games?

Rootbox Games is the games division of Rootbox Srl, an Italian studio that designs and builds digital products.
